The process of composing for “Comforting Skin” has been very different from any project I have worked on.
It was Derek’s goal to have the score and the cut grow organically at the same time. To have the music be part of the editing process of the film.
So here’s a quick recap on how we approached that, in order to avoid temp tracks. (There were no temp tracks on this film.)
- First was a lot of listening to music, sharing it with Derek (the director) and discussing it to find out if we were on the same page. We were.
- Then I wrote tons of ideas and created short mock-ups for each. Derek and I both liked the same ones.
- After this gestation period we sat down to spot the film and I had that magical improvisation moment I wrote about earlier.
- Because of that moment Derek asked me to improvise the entire score on piano, which I did (about 95% anyway.)
Based on this piano score, Derek has seen some changes he wants to make to the edit where there is music he finds especially evocative: add some shots here, reorder shots there.
Because a shot of someone walking or taking a bath doesn’t mean much on its own, but add the music and suddenly it feels like a window into their soul.
And now today, Derek is with the editor laying in that rough piano score I improvised and will be making those editorial changes, and perhaps some changes to the music as well!
Meanwhile, today I begin putting pencil to paper and begin putting the score into its final form.
